We're finally at a point in time where the “boys club” of techno has all but disappeared. I say almost, because, while still not quite equal, when you have a strong backbone of fantastic producers like Kane Roth bringing up the female forefront, you can't deny that there's something going on in that side of the gene pool. France, quietly creating techno monsters in its historical depths and making waves with its fantastic clubs, has created another monster - except this one far more beautiful and subtle than some of its peers.
Kane Roth appeared on the techno landscape in 2006 with a subtle release on Swiss techno monster Neopren Recordings, and ever since then, she's been dipping her hand in to the minimal basket to whip up a release, sporadically coming out with releases on techno powerhouse labels such as Canada's Archipel and London's Multi Vitamins. But with no signs of slowing down, the beauty has only just begun to let us hear her beast.
Coming with two originals and a remix, Roth's Stimulus EP is nothing to scoff at. The minimal pool of artists has been growing as of late, so its going to take a standout production to get notoriety - thank god we have Kane Roth to deliver a set of beats that'll surely be appearing on charts from here to Mars and back. Stimulus comes across as a Marco Carola production, with jerking bass-line's and an underlying, glitching stab that is doing its best to get you to submit to its funk. Quirky and repetitive, this shows flare of minimal's hey-day from Tresor while paying homage to today's flare and panache. Rounding out the original work from Roth is Noizy. Distinctly Paco Osuna with a touch of Pheek, this is the one to watch out for. There's never not a moment in this track that you subconsciously anticipate, knowing damn well that just as the percussion drops you're going to be treated to an equally abrupt return of its bounce and decay.
